Glossary
- Climate - The average weather conditions for a place taken over a period of time.
- Weather - The hour-to-hour, day-to-day, state of the atmosphere in relation to temperature, sunshine, precipitation and wind.
- Air Mass - A large mass of air with uniform temperatures and humidity.
- Anticyclone - An area of high pressure usually associated with settled weather.
- Depression - an area of low pressure in temperate latitudes usually associated with cloud, rain and strong winds.
- Front - The boundary between two air masses which have different temperature and humidity characteristics.
- Global Warming - The increase in the world's average temperature.
- Prevailing Wind - The direction from which the wind usually blows.
- Tropical Cyclone/Hurricane - A severe tropical storm, characterised by low pressure, heavy rainfall and extreme winds which are capable of causing widespread damage and loss of life.
- Isobars - Isobars are lines of equal atmospheric pressure drawn on a weather map.
- Climatic Hazard - A natural event brought about by the weather or climate that threatens life and property.
